China vs US: China Expanding Computing Power to Compete with the United States

China wants to increase its computing capacity by 50 percent by 2025. Also, the country is focusing more on supercomputing and artificial intelligence. Reuters reported that this information was found in a Chinese government plan published on Monday.

The high-tech battle between China and the US is escalating—from semiconductors to AI-based supercomputers. Also, to prevent the rise of China, the United States has limited the export of chip-making materials to the country.
China’s six ministries jointly plan this, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). By 2025, they want to increase China’s overall computing capacity to 300 EFLOPS, i.e., China wants to take its computing capacity to one quintillion floating point operations per second (with this capacity, it is possible to create a 100-year climate change simulation of the Earth in one hour).

MIIT reported last August that China’s computing capacity rose to 197 EFLOPS this year, up from 180 EFLOPS in 2022. According to MIIT, their position in terms of computing capacity is now second only to the United States. However, they did not give details about the computing capacity of the United States.

AI training requires massive computing power, so Beijing is increasingly interested in increasing computing capacity.

Meanwhile, in a blog post last month, Google said that the world’s top AI models require massive supercomputing capacity to reduce training time.

Now, China is thinking of building more data warehouses in different parts of the country to increase the computing capacity of business organizations. Beijing is also planning to build computing infrastructure in western China to meet the needs of the growing AI industry.

China’s southwestern Guizhou province has long been tasked with building a large-scale database to strengthen the country’s Internet system. For example, Apple has built a data center in Guizhou with a local partner.

Another critical issue for China is its computing network capabilities.
