In recent times, programming competitions have gained popularity in Bangladesh. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) is preparing to host the prestigious ‘ICPC Asia Dhaka Regional Competition 2023’ for the third consecutive year, solidifying its status as a significant computing event on the global stage.
BUBT’s Tradition of Excellence: Hosting ICPC Asia Dhaka Regional Competition
Bangladesh University of Business and Technology proudly hosted the ICPC Asia Dhaka Regional Competition in both 2014 and 2022, establishing a tradition of excellence. These events reflect the commitment of participants to advance computer science by leveraging their problem-solving skills to tackle intricate algorithmic challenges.
Both undergraduate and postgraduate students from various colleges and universities in Bangladesh will actively engage in this competition. The championship team will earn the honor of representing their institution at the prestigious ‘ICPC International Competition 2024’. Professor Dr. Moha Ali Noor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, is overseeing and supporting this significant event.
A total of 2461 teams initially registered online for the competition. To progress to the final round, these students were required to partake in an online mock contest. In the culminating round, participants will form teams of four, composed of three students and one teacher.
The President of the Executive Committee of the competition, Professor Dr. Moha Ali Noor, who also serves as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, expressed the competition’s mission. He emphasized that Bangladesh is advancing alongside the world in the field of information technology. The primary goal of the competition is to identify and nurture talented students in the technology sector, irrespective of gender. Notably, only 238 teams comprising girls participated in the preliminary competition.
Professor Dr. Moha Ali Noor further noted that despite many challenges in rural areas, gifted students need more opportunities to develop their talents fully. With the proper guidance and support, these young talents have the potential to make significant contributions and even conquer the world in the future.
What is The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC)?
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is the premier global programming competition conducted by and for the world’s universities. The ICPC is affiliated with the ICPC Foundation.
The ICPC traces its roots to 1970 when the first competition was hosted by pioneers of the Alpha Chapter of the UPE Computer Science Honor Society. The initiative spread quickly within the United States and Canada as an innovative program to raise increase ambition, problem-solving aptitude, and opportunities of the strongest students in the field of computing.
Over time, the contest evolved into a multi-tier competition with the first championship round conducted in 1977. Since then, the contest has expanded into a worldwide collaborative of universities hosting regional competitions that advance teams to the annual global championship round, the ICPC World Finals.
The contest fosters creativity, teamwork, and innovation in building new software programs, and enables students to test their ability to perform under pressure. The contest has raised aspirations and performance of generations of the world’s problem solvers in the computing sciences and engineering.
