AKM Mosharraf Hossain, an eminent businessman, holds the position of Managing Director at Standard Group, the nation’s foremost garment exporter. Starting his career as an engineer, he now oversees a workforce of approximately 50,000 individuals.

Mosharraf Hossain was born in 1942 in a village vulnerable to river erosion in Sirajganj. He exhibited exceptional academic prowess from an early age. Although he pursued studies in both mathematics and biology during his higher secondary education, he gained admission to the civil engineering department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1963.

Following his graduation, he embarked on a joint construction business venture in 1969 with his classmate, Atiqur Rahman. Subsequently, in 1976, he entered the clothing industry. Recognizing the substantial export potential, he acquired a factory in Dhaka to manufacture formal shirts for the US market.

Business

At present, the Standard Group operates 20 factories, producing a wide range of garments, including shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, and accessory items for the European and US markets. Their annual export value amounts to approximately $500 million.

The Standard Group is the trusted producer of clothing for renowned global brands such as Asda, Gap, Uniqlo, and Tommy Hilfiger. They are known for their unwavering commitment to adhering to the strict legal and safety regulations established by both governments and buyers.

In addition to their business pursuits, the Standard Group actively engages in various social activities, including supplying mosquito nets, providing skill training, offering financial services, granting education and medical loans, and distributing warm clothing to their employees.

Mosharraf Hossain’s entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond the garment industry. He has diversified into the education, banking, and insurance sectors. He currently holds the position of Chairman at International Standard University and serves as a Director at Jamuna Bank Limited.

His three sons and two daughters of a friend are on the company’s board of directors, poised to become the second generation to carry forward the family’s business legacy.
